At Safari Adv Ltd, we are committed to promoting responsible tourism, ensuring that all our operations and travel experiences contribute to the well-being of the environment, local communities, and wildlife across Africa. Our sustainability policy reflects our dedication to minimizing negative impacts and maximizing the positive contributions of tourism. We focus on key areas to maintain the integrity of the destinations we offer while promoting respect for local cultures and ecosystems.

Our mission

We have decided to commit to the sustainability certification process to learn, improve, implement, and promote good sustainability practices in the social, environmental, and economic aspects of our business. 

We will work and adopt actions to maximize the positive impacts and minimize the negative ones of our operations. 

Our goal is to make tomorrow better than yesterday, to influence positively, inspire, and treat with dignity our team members, clients, suppliers, and partners, and to be an example of good practices in our country and throughout the entire region.

Our Sustainability Policy

This policy is applied to all operations, from management to the executive level of our company. 

Staff, suppliers, and partners are expected to fully support the objectives set out in this policy whenever possible, in accordance with allocated budgets. 

We recognize that our influence over third parties is limited. Although we cannot control their decisions, we are committed to educating them about our policy and encouraging them to align their operational practices with the policy’s objectives.

Sustainability Management and Legal Compliance

We commit to:

• Have an active sustainability coordinator who has completed the Travelife Sustainability basic training and exam and is responsible for monitoring, reporting, and implementing the sustainability policy and action plan. 
• Define and publish our mission statement and sustainability policy. 
• Conducting a baseline assessment of the company’s performance in sustainable practices. 
• Ensure the company’s transparency in sustainability matters through public reports and communications. 
• Engage staff in our sustainability action plan and ensuring that our collaborators are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it. 
• Comply with all national sustainability legislation.

Internal Social Management

We commit to:

• Create opportunities for students to participate in internships/apprenticeships.
• Guarantee employees the freedom of employment and the ability to terminate their contracts with notice and without penalties.
• Include in the employment contract working conditions in accordance with national legislation, a job description, and compensation equal to or greater than the national legal minimum wage.
• Ensure employees receive fixed paid annual leave and sick leave.
• Offer equal opportunities regarding recruitment, employment conditions, access to training, and positions of responsibility to all candidates, without discrimination based on gender, race, age, disability, ethnicity, religious belief, and sexual orientation.
• Declare not to obstruct union membership, collective bargaining, and representation of members by unions.
• Have a health and safety policy for employees that complies with national legal standards.
• Comply with national regulations regarding the minimum age for employment.
• Regularly measure the satisfaction and complaints of our collaborators and taking steps for improvement.
• Offer our collaborators the opportunity to gain experience in their jobs and have career advancements within the company.

Internal Environmental Management

We commit to:

• Actively reduce and (when possible) avoid the use of disposable and consumable goods.
• Take action to find solutions and improve our internal waste management.
• Comply with national waste disposal legislation.
• Implement waste reduction methods.

What we do:

• We primarily use glass and ceramic cups, plates, and glasses.
• We prioritize the purchase and use of sustainable goods and services.
• We measure, monitor, and seek solutions to reduce energy and water consumption.
• We set all our equipment to energy-saving mode.
• We prefer to use natural light to limit energy consumption.
• When we travel, we use solar panels to generate as much energy as possible.
• We prefer energy-efficient equipment when purchasing new items, considering cost and quality.
• We reduce transportation impacts through teleworking, video conferencing, work-from-home policies, or other means.
• We measure and reduce staff travel.
• We properly maintain and inspect company motor vehicles to reduce emissions and energy consumption, ensuring compliance with legal emissions standards.

Company Procurement Management

The company has implemented policies that promote the purchase of sustainable goods and services, such as:

• Food & Beverages: We choose to collaborate with suppliers offering organic and locally sourced products, such as fruits and vegetables grown nearby, which support sustainable agriculture and reduce environmental impact. Additionally, we work with restaurants that offer menus based on local and seasonal ingredients.
• Consumable Materials: We opt for eco-friendly consumable materials, such as recycled paper and office supplies with ecological certifications, to reduce our environmental footprint.
• Promotional Items: We prioritize selecting eco-friendly promotional gadgets, such as reusable water bottles or organic cotton bags, to promote a message of sustainability among our customers.
• Transport Services: We collaborate with transport companies that use low-emission vehicles, contributing to more sustainable tourism. For example, we arrange transfers with hybrid minibuses to reduce carbon emissions.

• Include key sustainability clauses in contracts with inbound/event partners. 
• Encourage inbound partners to participate in sustainability training courses. 
• Monitor and communicate the sustainability activities and practices of companies to inbound partners. 
• Comply with national and international regulations concerning child labor, forced labor, prison labor, and other forms of human exploitation.
• Require the adoption of guidelines for tour guides and tour leaders, which are defined and considered essential by Safari Adv.

Our Social Responsibility

We are committed to: 

• Support social and/or economic activities for local groups and/or communities. 
• Promote projects to support environmental conservation, social well-being, and local capacity development. 
• Support local activities that promote economic development and the well-being of local communities. 
• Include information on how our practices affect the local community and ensuring community feedback to identify further improvement opportunities. 
• Be ready to aid and support in emergency situations. 
• Actively collaborate with local associations, institutions, organizations, and authorities to ensure our impacts are positive and sustainable. 
• Participate in and promote local events and community initiatives.

Transports

We are committed to: 

• Select the most sustainable options while considering price and comfort when choosing transportation methods for the destination. 
• Consider and give preference to more sustainable alternatives when selecting transportation options for transfers and excursions at the destination, considering price, comfort, and practical considerations. 
• Integrate and/or promote one or more sustainable holiday products/packages based on a recognized methodology, including sustainable transportation, sustainable accommodations, and sustainable activities.
• Select new destinations while considering the most sustainable ways to reach them.

Awareness Among Our Partner Accommodations

We are committed to: 

• Motivate and encourage partner accommodations to obtain sustainability certifications. 
• Prefer and select locally owned and managed accommodations. 
• Choose accommodations that employ local communities. 
• Encourage accommodations to follow best practices in responsible tourism. 
• Include standard sustainability clauses in all contracts with accommodation providers, focusing on child labor, corruption, waste management, and biodiversity protection. 
• Work with accommodations and restaurants that incorporate elements of local art, architecture, or cultural heritage, respecting the intellectual property rights of local communities. 
• Choose accommodations and facilities that respect local traditions and cultures.
• Ensure that, through our accommodation supply chain, children’s rights are respected and safeguarded, and that there is a zero-tolerance policy against the sexual exploitation of children. 
• End cooperation with accommodations if there is clear evidence that contracted accommodations compromise the provision of basic services such as food, water, energy, healthcare, or land to nearby businesses.

Our Excursions and Activities

We are committed to: 

• Maintain an inventory of environmentally or culturally sensitive excursions offered in each destination. 
• Inform guests about behavioral standards during excursions and activities, focusing on respecting local culture, nature, and the environment.
• Offer only excursions that have no negative impact on the natural environment. These may include excursions in well-managed protected areas or guided by expert tour leaders. 
• Not offer any excursion that harms humans, animals, plants, natural resources such as water and energy, or that is socially and culturally unacceptable. 
• Not offer any excursion where wildlife is held in captivity, except for adequately regulated activities in accordance with local, national, and international legislation. 
• Not be involved with companies that collect, consume, display, sell, or trade wildlife species unless it is part of a regulated activity that ensures their use is sustainable and compliant with local, national, and international legislation. 
• Have qualified and/or certified guides to lead our guests in culturally sensitive sites, heritage sites, or ecologically sensitive destinations. 
• Promote and advise our guests on excursions and activities that engage and directly support local communities through the purchase of services or goods, traditional crafts, and local (food) production methods, or by visiting social projects. 
• Promote and advise our guests on excursions and activities that support the local environment and biodiversity, such as visiting protected areas or environmental protection projects.”

Our Tour Leaders and our Guides

We are committed to: 

• Ensure that all employees and collaborators have a written employment contract, including working conditions and a job description, and fully understand the terms and conditions. 
• Choose to work with local tour leaders, drivers, and guides when their skills are comparable, and providing training if necessary. 
• Pay local tour leaders, drivers, guides, and other contracted staff at least a living wage, equal to or above the legal minimum wage or relevant industry standards. 
• Ensure that our local collaborators are informed about various aspects of our sustainability policy and adhere to it. 
• Make sure our tour leaders, drivers, and guides are informed about relevant sustainability issues in the destination (e.g., protection of flora, fauna, and cultural heritage, resource use), social norms and values (e.g., tipping, dress code, and photography), and human rights (e.g., sexual exploitation).
• Ensure that all our guides and tour leaders follow the specifically defined guidelines, without exception.

Our Destinations 

We are committed to: 

• Consider sustainability aspects in the selection process of new destinations and, when possible, offering alternative, unconventional destinations. 
• Not select destinations where tourism leads to negative structural local effects (unless the company’s involvement results in clear compensatory effects). 
• Consider the selection of new destinations that can be reached through more sustainable transportation methods. 
• Base planning on legal regulations, protected areas, and heritage regulations, as well as the destination management strategies of local, regional, and national authorities. 
• Support initiatives that improve relationships between accommodations and local producers. 
• Influence and supporting local government (when possible, alongside other travel companies and stakeholders) on sustainability, destination planning and management, natural resource use, and socio-cultural issues. 
• Support biodiversity conservation, including protected areas and areas of high biodiversity, through financial contributions, political support, and integration into product offerings. 
• Not promote souvenirs that contain species of threatened flora and fauna as listed in the CITES treaty and the IUCN ‘Red List’; or historical and archaeological artifacts (except as permitted by law). 
• Support locally produced souvenirs and indicating which suppliers offer them to our customers.”

Our Clients

We are committed to: 

• Ensure that customer privacy is not compromised. 
• Respect relevant standards and voluntary codes of conduct in marketing and advertising messages, and not promising more than what is actually provided. 
• Make information about products and prices clear, complete, and accurate, regarding the company and its products and services, including sustainability claims. 
• Provide destination information, including sustainability aspects, that is correct, balanced, and complete. 
• Inform customers about the environmental impact of different transportation options to reach the destination (if not included in the package) and offering sustainable alternatives when available. 
• Promote sustainable accommodations, excursions, packages, and/or transportation options. 
• Inform customers about sustainable alternatives related to accommodations, excursions, vacation packages, and transportation options, if available. 
• Clearly inform customers about sustainability commitments and actions. 
• Provide customers with information about the natural environment, local culture, and cultural heritage in the holiday destination. 

Inform consumers about key aspects and sustainability issues in the destination and receiving recommendations.”
